It seems that Augmented Reality (AR) is going to become more and more popular, especially with modern phones such as Apple’s iPhone and several Android-powered devices able to support it. The latest application of such technology can be found with the United States Marine Corps. The system they use is called ARMAR (Augmented Reality for Maintenance and Repair), developed at the Columbia University’s Computer Graphics and User Interface Lab. What this does is it uses an Android-powered handset to provide a viewable interface to control the graphics, together with a head-mounted display unit to provide graphic overlays to assist users while making repairs. The system will use 3D animations to demonstrate the appropriate tools and technique to use in various repairs. This is just one of the practical uses of AR, and we certainly hope to see more and more innovative implementations of AR. Check out a video on ARMAR if you’re interested.
