We have been so used to scanners coming in the form of a flatbed form factor, that handheld versions aren’t really ready for prime time use, although the HoverCam treads the middle ground with hopes of phasing out the former in due process. This USB-powered device takes up a whole lot less desktop space, and is touted to be able to make scanning, faxing, emailing, archiving and organizing files a less painful process – with adjectives like quicker, neater and more enjoyable being the rule of thumb here. All scanned documents will be stored in the RIA format (Rich Internet Application), while an anti-skew program has been built-in. Automatic trimming for documents scanned on a black background makes life a whole lot easier, while drag-and-drop functionality makes it a snap to create folders and PDFs in a jiffy. Available in HoverCam X300 and X500 models, the former has a 2-megapixel camera and 1,600 x 1,200 (150dpi equivalent) maximum resolution while the latter has a 5-megapixel shooter and a maximum resolution of 2,544 x 1,936 (600dpi equivalent). You will need to fork out $139.99 for the HoverCam X300, while the office-ready X500 is going for $199.99.
