Synology has announced a couple of NAS drives that will target home consumers as well as those who are serious about enterprise usage. Powered by Intel processors, they run on an embedded Linux operating system for superior performance. First off is the enterprise-grade NAS, the Synology DS1010+ that boasts a five-bay expansion enclosure, capable of handling either 2.5″ or 3.5″ SATA drives. Apart from that, it can manage RAID levels 1, 2 or 6 while offering an eSATA port just in case you require more storage space. As for the DiskStation DS110j, this consumer model is powered by an 800MHz processor and will be able to hold only one 2.5″ or 3.5″ SATA drive of your choice, sans RAID support to boot. The DS1010+ is tipped to ship from March onwards, while the DS110j can now be purchased for $150.
