Three New Cortex CPUs Coming From ARM

Looks like the future is bright for mobile devices, especially since ARM has revealed the roadmap for future iterations of its Cortex-A series of chips. The upcoming chip is codenamed Eagle, and is estimated to have 3 billion units produced annually. While there isn’t too much information on it revealed just yet, we do know that it’s targeted at smartphones, mobile computing and digital TV products. Word is that it’ll be a 28nm multi-core chip shipping around 2012. According to the slide, additional chips dubbed Heron and Merlin will also be appearing sometime in the future.

ARM ARM usually refers to the company ARM holdings, which is now famous for being behind the processor designs of the large majority (some say 98%) of the smartphones in the world. The ARM Architecture is a set of instructions based on the idea of RISC (reduced instruction set computer) which says that reducing the number of instructions to the most basic enables faster execution of each instruction. ARM Licenses the instruction set or complete processor design to its clients, which includes Nvidia, Qualcomm, Marvell, Freescale, TI, ST-Ericsson and many others.

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. In a computer, there is at least one CPU, which many have one more more processing Cores, which can often be considered to be CPUs themselves. The modern concept of CPU is usually a silicon chip that performs two basic tasks: its control unit fetches instructions from memory and executes them and the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) computes basic math and logic operations. The CPU is a critical component in a computer.
