Algae could be harvested for electricity

Boffins at Stanford University are currently attempting to generate electrical current by tapping into the electron activity of individual algae cells. This has been proven somewhat successful with a specially designed gold electrode which has been pushed through a cell membrane, followed by sealing it up after that. The cell remains alive and will continue with its photosynthesis process, from where chemical energy can be harvested in the form of electrons. Apparently, this means protons and oxygen are the byproducts, which could lead it to be another truly green power source of the future.
