While grayscale e-paper devices are abundant, color e-paper technology still has some way to go. Now Fujitsu has unveiled a vastly improved form of color e-paper to help move the technology forward. With Fujitsu’s new display the contrast is about three times better than Fujitsu’s previous offering. The contrast is currently 7:1, offering noticeably deeper blacks. The refresh speed has also been improved, with a 1024 x 768 color image being redrawn in just 0.7 seconds, much too slow for video, but still a lot closer to the speed of grayscale e-paper. According to Fujitsu, the company is planning to churn out an eBook reader that utilizes this new color e-paper this fall, and we’re looking forward to color eBook readers becoming commonplace.
