Rumor: Apple Was Originally Considering An AMOLED Display For The iPhone 4G?

As we inch closer and closer to the unveiling of Apple’s next-generation iPhone 4G, some interesting little pieces of information regarding it have started to surface. First off we’ve got word that Apple had originally considered an AMOLED display for the device, but it was ultimately rejected due to supply and technology problems. If the rumors are true, Apple did talk to Samsung Mobile Display, but found out that its AMOLED production capacity was well below what it would need, and if they dedicated its entire AMOLED production for the iPhone, it would still only handle about 50-60 percent of the orders. Just goes to show what kind of demand that Apple is expecting for the iPhone 4G, huh? Such displays would also cost more, with figures listed at $34-$38 for the AMOLED display, while an IPS panel would cost $20 and the cheaper TN panel would cost $10. Other details included in the rumor are that Samsung is believed to be using Nouvoyance’s PenTile technique to develop its AMOLED displays, which might not offer the kind of performance that Apple is looking for either. Are you looking forward to the unveiling of the iPhone 4G?
