SED TVs Officially Abandoned by Canon

Canon has announced that it will stop pursuing building TVs with its SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display). The reason is that the company just hasn’t been able to bring the cost down to the point of making it a viable alternative. Instead, Canon will use SED to pursue higher margins businesses like industrial or medical displays.

SED displays have been demonstrated for years, and in theory, they could have brought a better contrast and response time than LCD displays (at least back then). However, the rapid progress and most importantly the falling prices of LCD panels made SED quite irrelevant. OLED is expected to be the next big thing… if it can be produced in large size, and at a reasonable cost. [via Reuters]
