HTC Hero and Samsung Moment frozen in Android 2.1 forever

Looks like owners of the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment from Sprint will be stuck with Android 2.1 forever, as Sprint recently issued an announcement confirming such devastating news. Of course, those who picked up the EVO 4G will be spared of the blushes, since an update to Android 2.2 is expected in the near future without any concrete date assigned just yet. Here’s a question for mobile carriers who sell Android-powered smartphones – how long should a handset be supported in terms of firmware after it has been released? If you had bought either a HTC Hero or Samsung Moment, will this decision affect your future phone purchases?
