Lizard-like Robot Is Able To Navigate Well In The Sand

Navigating through sand is always tricky business, as it can behave as both a solid and a fluid, so making a robot that can easily navigate through such a situation is challenging. The smart folks over at the Georgia Institute of Technology have decided to research the Sandfish Lizard, which is able to travel through sand effortlessly, and have modeled their robot similarly. The robot is covered in spandex, probably so the sand doesn’t mess up its joints, and is able to navigate through sand quite well. In case you’re wondering, such a robot would be pretty useful for exploring disaster sites, since it can easily fit into places that most humans wouldn’t be able to fit into, or would be too dangerous to enter. Will we be seeing more robots modeled about creatures out there in the future? Check out a video of this robot after the jump.
