SanDisk Ships In Volume Its WORM SD Cards To The Japanese Police force

While many of us won’t be around after another 100 years or so, there is still a great deal of digital data that needs to outlive us, and SanDisk thinks that it has the solution to that. The company has announced that it is shipping in volume its 1GB SanDisk SD Write Once Read Many (WORM) memory cards to Japan’s police force, allowing them to implement the card as the storage media of choice for tamper-proof forensic image archiving. These cards are capable of storing images for up to 100 years, andare tamper-proof to assure the accuracy and legitimacy of forensic evidence. Considering that there is no statute of limitations for certain serious crimes in Japan, there is a strong need to be able to retain data for long periods of time. With this, law enforcement officers will be able to create unalterable permanent photographic records for evidence during investigations. All that needs to be done is to insert the card into an SD WORM-compatible digital camera, and fire away. Seems a lot more useful than traditional 35mm film, wouldn’t you say?
