Verizon lets you change Droid Incredible pre-orders to Motorola Droid X?

It seems that Verizon Wireless has started to be a little bit creative with the pre-order status of the Droid Incredible considering this smartphone is currently suffering from supply shortages, where they seem to allow customers who pre-ordered a Droid Incredible to cancel said order while picking up the Motorola Droid X in place. Needless to say, the latter handset is not available as at press time just yet – at least until the middle of next month, but that is still at least 10 days earlier than the promised July 26th shipping date for the Droid Incredible. There are suggestions being thrown about that the Droid Incredible could be phased out, although it doesn’t really hold much water considering how new the smartphone is in the market.

Update 6/29/2010: Verizon has confirmed to us that the carrier was not taking pre-orders at this time. However, customers can pre-order at Best Buy. Here is the official statement from Verizon about the Incredible/Droid X order swap:

“It [Droid Incredible] has proven to be very, very popular with our customers. Should a customer who has ordered a Droid Incredible decide that the Droid X (or any other device) better meets his/her needs, he/she can take advantage of the Verizon Wireless Worry Free Guarantee and choose the Droid X when it goes on sale July 15.Customers cannot pre-order the Droid X with us.”
