VIA recently demonstrated a working prototype of a dual-core x86 processor at Computex 2010 in Taiwan, where it runs at 1.6GHz and was manufactured using a 65-nanometer process. This dual core Nano DC was tipped to hit the market last year originally, but as we all know by know, even the best laid plans can get derailed due to circumstances. It looks like all the niggling problems have been weeded out to date, and VIA is more or less prepared to offer the processor to the mass market within the next 6 months. The commercial version of the processor will not be made using a 65-nanometer process however, although VIA is coy enough to mention that it will rely on “next-generation” technology. Will Intel’s Atom range feel threatened with this new development?
