The WayPilot system is an ingenious method of alerting drivers who have started to stray off course – this is made possible thanks to a bunch of embedded sensors within the asphalt alongside a shaking steering wheel. How does it work, you ask? For starters, radio transponders that are encased in robust plastic casings are buried under the top asphalt layer of the road. These will communicate with corresponding devices in the base of a test car’s door openings, and whenever the vehicle’s transponders get too close to those in the road, the steering wheel will start to vibrate in order to alert the driver. Hopefully it will be implemented in roads worldwide soon, as there are many drivers out there who actually take the chance and get behind the wheel even when they’re sleepy.
