T-Mobile May Charge Apple And Google For Heavy Data Use?

It’s an idea that might have consumers slightly worried, but Rene Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile’s parent company, has stated in a recent interview that Apple and Google should pay more for higher-quality mobile data, as iPhones and Android devices use a lot of data on the network, and should be slapped with an extra surcharge if they need an exceptionally fast or reliable network for media streaming. Talks are apparently already underway with Google at the very least, though there isn’t any indication if any burden will be passed on to the consumers just yet. That being said, it’s obvious that carriers are feeling the strain when it comes to keeping up with the data demands of the more Internet-centric modern phones, with AT&T’s network frequently being overwhelmed and also recently implementing a 2GB data cap in place of the original unlimited data plans.

Publisher’s note: if carriers can’t take it anymore, they should go ahead an buy phones that people don’t use. Oh wait… but the problem is that people won’t pay for that. And what’s the point of being a carrier if one can’t build a decent network that pulls a profit? Just charge people per MB/GB and let the market decide, but don’t sell “unlimited plans”, then whine.
