Canon 20x20cm CMOS sensor (yes... cm!)

This would probably land in the “bizarre” category for regular folks: Canon is working on a sensor that is absolutely huge compared to normal cameras (40X). The above picture says it all… On the right, you can see a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that would be found in a $2500 DSLR. Called ultra-large-scale CMOS sensor, the one on the left could be used in… a telescope? lol. The benefit of having such a huge sensor, is that it grabs so much light that it is possible to shoot video at 60fps in very dim lighting conditions, and by “very dim”, we mean “moon light”. Another feat of technology is that this sensor is built from a single piece of silicon, and it is not a bunch of smaller sensors. This is the largest single-chip design -ever- on a 300mm silicon wafer. Wow.
