Facebook Costing UK Billions

According to the latest poll on social media conducted by British job site MyJobGroup.co.uk, social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace could potentially cost British companies and small businesses billions in loss productivity. Of the 1,000 British workers polled, 6 percent admitted to spending an hour or more of the work day visiting social media sites.

“Our results clearly show that UK workers are spending increased time whilst at work on social media networks, which, left unchecked, could have negative repercussions on the productivity of many companies across the country,” said Managing Director of Myjobgroup.co.uk Lee Fayer.

The net impact? According to MyJobGroup.co.uk, Britain could lose up to 14 billion pounds, or the equivalent of $22.16B US in loss productivity.

Social media is part of a complex equation in many organizations. With proper use of the web-based technology helping to boost a company’s image and goodwill and gives many companies the opportunity to respond to customer complaints and issues rapidly, there is also concerned for misuse. Though over half of Brits surveyed admitted to accessing friend feeds, tweets, posting photos and videos, and uploading comments and pictures to social media sites, only 14% admitted that they are less productive at work and 10% think that they are more productive.

And did someonechecked if workers were actually getting the “job done” (or not)? It seems to us that this is the most interesting part of the equation… [via Yahoo News]
