The first poo-powered VW Beetle in the UK has started to make its way through the streets of Bristol, where it is touted to be a ‘breakthrough in the drive to encourage sustainable power.’ Powered by methane gas which is generated during the sewage treatment process, the Bio-Bug, as it is affectionately known, requires waste from just 70 homes in Bristol to power it for the entire year. Of course, we’re talking about an average of 10,000 miles traveled annually, but still, it is food for thought. Will this idea catch on? Perhaps, as India and China already use compressed natural gas (CNG) to provide fuel for their vehicles, while Sweden alone has over 11,500 vehicles that run on methane which were harvested from sewage plants.
