Private Car Service to Create City-Wide WiFi Network for NYC

New York City is looking to build out its public WiFi network through the use of private car services. Users can log on to the ad-supported WiFi network for free and if enough private car service automobiles drive around with signal, commoners can have free access to the Internet.

LimoRes Car & Limo Service has already outfitted 25 of the company’s cars with Internet access, and according to the company’s founder, the goal is to expand from there: “Our plan is to basically blanket the city with tens of thousands of vehicles.” The company anticipates 1,000 WiFi cars by fall, complete with power outlets and charging ports for mobile devices.

If you’re comfortable enough to have access to your own driver and car service for the day, you can hop onto the net for free from the backseat and get some work done. If you’re sitting at a cafe waiting, you’ll also be able to do the same, though the downside is if you’re out of the wireless reach of a network and hop to another car’s WiFi network, you’ll have to manually connect–there is no seamless, direct hand-off between one car’s network and the next.
