Take and Track Your Pills as Prescribed? There's An App for That.

For patients who need to take their pills on time, tech start-up Proteus Biomedical has developed an edible microchip that can be embedded inside most prescription medications that can talk with a smartphone to track dosage information.

Users will wear a computerized skin patch, which communicates with the microchip and relays the information to a smartphone over Bluetooth. The Proteus Raisin, as the system is called, can monitor the dose, time of day the pill was taken, heart rate, pulse, and physical activity level.

Should a patient forget to take a pill or takes the wrong amount, the phone will alert the patient with an error message, which can also be collated and sent to the physician.

At this time, the Proteus Raisin system is not yet available for sale, though the company is saying that clinical trials are under way.
