Gameloft Sells More Than 20 Million Games On The App Store

If there was any doubt that game development companies were serious about Apple’s iOS platform, the announcement by mobile game developer Gameloft that it has sold more than 20 million games on the App Store should blow away any such doubts. According to the company, of the 47 iPhone and iPad games that they launched from the beginning of this year, an amazing 42 of them have hit the top five spot on Apple’s Top Grossing charts, and 25 have even hit the top spot. After 20 million paid downloads, the company isn’t planning to stop anytime soon and is already planning to release another 15 games on the store this year, including: Assassin’s Creed: AltaÃ¯r’s Chronicles HD, Dungeon Hunter 2, Star Battalion and Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus. iOS was once upon a time called iPhone OS, or "operating system", which is the software that provides all the basic device functionality and is the interface between the hardware and applications. iOS was introduced with the iPhone on January 9 2007, and it was originally not intended to be programmable by third parties. Steve Jobs had envisioned that developers could create Web Apps that would run in the browser. This changed less than one year after when the iPhone SDK (software development kit) was introduced in October 2007. Today, hundreds of thousands of apps have been created for this platform. iPhone OS became iOS on June 2010. Interestingly, both iPhone and iOS were former trademarks of Cisco, that Apple now uses under a license.
