Microsoft’s Bing search engine has just overtaken Yahoo to take the second place spot for search engine’s in the US, which means it is now going to go up against Google at the top – at least that’s what The Nielsen Company says. In August alone, Bing grew from 13.6 percent to 13.9 percent of the US search market, while Yahoo declined from 14.3 percent to 13.1 percent. As for top dog Google, their share went up from 64.2 percent in July to 65.0 percent. Even with Bing and Yahoo combined, their search share of 27.0 percent is still less than that of Google’s. Of course, how one interprets statistics is a matter of relativity, and in this case Nielsen relies on search data that counts only “genuine intentional searches” which users type into a search box, and that rules out contextual searches which are automatically generated by search engines that are based on browsing behavior.
