QNAP’s NMP-1000 Networked Media Player has been out for one year now, and QNAP decided to offer an update in the form of the NMP-1000P. This device will be powered by Sigma Designs’ latest 667Mhz chip which is capable of full 1080p HD video alongside Dolby and DTS multi-channel surround sound. What makes it different from other media streamer devices? Well, for starters it does double up as a NAS device that makes it suitable for file sharing and PC backup when you stash in a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive. Its main course would be the ability to stream files from network shares when files are available via DLNA/UPnP, SMB, and NFS. USB and eSATA ports are also available just in case you need more storage than necessary. Expect the NMP-1000P to retail for $450 when available, where this purchase ought to tide you over for at least a couple of years before the upgrade bug bites.
