RIM Patents Traffic-sensing Billboards

Perhaps RIM intends to get its feet wet in the advertising scene too, as patent filings for some billboard systems have been filed by RIM, called the “Adaptive roadside billboard system and related methods” and the “Adaptive pedestrian billboard system and related methods”. The design allows the billboards to determine the traffic speed and density near the billboard, and determine which kind of advertising to display on it. It does make some sense, though, as you’d be more likely to notice a large company logo displayed when you’re driving fast, instead of detailed breakdown of the pricing of some product. On the other hand, if you’re stuck in a bad traffic jam, perhaps you’d want to stare at the billboard more to take your mind off things. One of the methods mentioned to measure traffic proposed by RIM could be via the GPS sensors in mobile devices that folks carry with them, though it’s only one of the ideas amongst many.
