In a keynote address by Sprint CEO’s Dan Hesse on Wednesday, he mentioned that Sprint might have to switch from fixed to tiered rates for their 4G service. This is only if people start overusing their unlimited data service, which they will monitor closely from now on. “We can offer unlimited data, as long as usage on the network is reasonable,” he said. “But if I have an all-you-can-eat buffet, and the entire New England Patriots football team shows up for dinner, it’s going to run me out of business.” This spells bad news for Sprint 4G users, as the unlimited plan is one of the most attractive points of Sprint’s plan. This could be bad news for the company as well, if unsatisfied customers jump ship to another carrier for better rates. Though we wonder, if you were a carrier that offered unlimited 4G service, shouldn’t you be prepared for the inevitable massive surge in data traffic?
