Sony And HID Global To Unite FeliCa And NFC In Notebooks

Sony and HID Global are planning to unite FeliCa and NFC (near-field communication) in notebooks. The setup will work on both formats, giving portable devices a convenient way of paying for items or signing in by just bringing a device within close proximity. The plan is currently still in the early stages, but they plan to make details and availability known next year. While it’s currently targeted at computers, the technology might have an impact on mobile phones too, as FeliCa has largely been limited to Japanese phones. With such developments, it might help spur the adoption of NFC, since the folks over in Japan shouldn’t have an issue using such technology in their day-to-day lives. With Nokia set to offer NFC in all of its phones in 2011 and Apple rumored to be making an NFC-ready iPhone, we’re looking forward to the convenience of paying for lunch via our mobile phones.
