Steeper initiative aims to reduce vampiric power for higher efficiency

Going green is the mantra for many companies these days, so it is no surprise to see a research project known as the Steeper initiative intending to reduce electronics’ power consumption by up to ten times – and in the process, virtually eliminating the so-called vampire power which most people don’t pay attention to anyways. With IBM and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (or EPFL) at the helm, this EU-funded project will rely on nanotechnology to reduce power consumption at the level of transistors and nanowires, where they intend to reduce operating voltage to less than 0.5 volts, which in turn reduces overall power consumption by one order of magnitude. Hopefully this initiative will be a success and be implemented worldwide – more energy for everyone!
