WorldHaus offers $2500 house kit

Hmmm, before we actually went ahead with this post, we had to pinch ourselves a few times for good. After all, how many of you can find a $2500 house these days? This home kit, if commercialized, aims to help billions worldwide own a home with clean electricity, plumbing and cooking facilities. Meant to be easily assembled (as easy as Ikea stuff, perhaps?), it is also cheap to manufacture and most importantly, will not leave a negative mark on the environment. It will see the integration of solar lighting, ventilation and water collection, while boasting facilities for clean cooking. WorldHaus aims to make this kit available to poor families in India, Kenya and South Africa within one year, with a target of supplying 5,000 families by 2013. Of course, the final manufacturing price has yet to be lowered to $2500. The down payment is $249, followed by $29 or so in monthly payments.

Update: this post previously mentioned a $300 price. This was an error. As corrected, the price is $2500, with a down payment of $249, and a monthly payment of $29. Apologies for the mistake.
