Young Inventor Comes Up With Solar-powered Fridge

Emily Cummins is a 23-year old Leeds University Graduate who was named amongst the 10 most outstanding young people in the world. What did she come up with? Well, a solar-powered fridge sounds pretty cool. The fridge works on the principles of evaporation and features two cylinders, one inside the other. The inner cylinder is made from metal while the outer cylinder can be made from wood or plastic. The gap between the two cylinders is filled with a material such as sand or soil which can be soaked with water, allowing the sun’s rays to heat the wet material, evaporating the water. As the water evaporates, the heat is removed from the inner cylinder, keeping the contents at a cool temperature of 6 degrees Celsius. In order to keep the fridge functioning, users will just have to ensure that the material is re-soaked when needed.
