According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, AirPlay will be more widely available in iOS devices in 2011. Jobs was responding to user concerns about the limited scope of AirPlay support in the current version of the iOS operating system on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, version 4.2. One user had emailed Jobs inquiring about extending AirPlay functionality “for videos in safari and 3rd party app,” to which the CEO responded, “Yep, hope to add these features to Airplay in 2011.” Because of its limited implementation inside the iOS environment thus far, AirPlay has been hacked by enterprising users, via the jailbreaking process, to extend functionality to third-party apps.
