Intel breaks new ground yet again, this time round with their Atom processor which has certainly stamped its mark where portable devices are concerned, especially netbooks and tablets. The latest configurable Atom processor series, the E600C, also known as the Stellarton, will comprise of an Altera Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) while enabling a wider range of task-specific chips to enter the market much faster without having to perform extensive hardware changes. This new Atom processor is more than able to accommodate a range of standard and user-defined I/O interfaces, high-speed connections, memory interfaces and special hardware acceleration. Guess this means we can look forward to a slew of new Atom-powered devices from next year onwards that will be a whole lot more flexible and powerful (if the manufacturers leverage on its advantages, of course)!
