Microsoft patents shape-shifting display

Microsoft is applying for a patent on a display technology that would let the screen surface slightly change shape and modify how smooth it is. Such behavior could be used in many ways to make it easier for the finger to stop on buttons, to mark a clear path in a game, or to produce apps for visually-impaired people for example.

The technology itself works by having a layer of the screen that can change shape. It can sense where the user puts his/her finger by using infra-red light (like a proximity sensor?). Right now, it’s not clear if the surface can be made to be bumpy anywhere, or just where the user fingers have touched last. Let’s hope that it is the former.
