Athlete robot could beat Olympians in the future

When it comes to athletic prowess, humans still outperform robots when it comes to speed and agility on the track and field, although this isn’t to say that robots are too far behind. Check out this latest invention, where a robot was fitted with a pair of prosthetic blades and fourteen artificial, pneumatic-powered muscles, resulting in a bipedal humanoid who is tipped to be a future sprinter. Simply known as the Athlete, this pet project of Japanese researcher Ryuma Niiyama boasts seven muscles in each leg, where each of those muscles will hold one to six actuators, resulting in the ability to provide enough air power to replicate our own muscle system. Touch sensors have also been incorporated on each foot, with an inertial metering system helping it remain upright even when chasing down baddies on foot. We do wonder whether it will run in an upright gait like the T1000 in Terminator 2.
