Hitachi Ships The First 7mm 500GB Notebook Hard Drive

Hitachi should be rather happy to ship the Travelstar Z5K500, the first 2.5-inch, 5400RPM, 7mm disk to offer 500GB of storage, beating the previous record of 320GB. The drive only uses a single platter and should be suitable for notebooks that find a 9.5mm drive too thick. The Z5K500 features 8MB of cache and uses the new Advanced Format approach to sectors which increases the physical sector size on HDDs from 512 bytes to 4,096 (4K) bytes, thereby improving drive capacity and error correction capabilities. Other good news comes in the form that the drive isn’t too hungry when it comes to power, only consuming 1.8W of power at peak, something that Mother Nature and notebooks with small batteries will be happy to hear about.
