By now most of us are familiar with using gestures to perform actions with Microsoft’s Kinect sensor, but what about the iPad? Elliptic Labs has come up with the Touchless Gesture User Interface technology that allows the user to make hand movements/gestures similar to those used on the Kinect, and control devices such as the iPad. The prototype that will be demonstrated at CES is a touchless dock for the iPad, and it uses ultrasound to create a “touchless” zone that covers about a foot in front of and to the side of the iPad’s display. The idea behind it is that it would be very useful in scenarios where a user wouldn’t be able to touch the display, due to their hands being wet or greasy, a common situation in the kitchen. The hardware and sensors used are actually “off the shelf” components and all that is needed is a simple app to run on the tablet to make it all work.
