NASA Sells Off PCs Without Wiping Sensitive Data

The folks over at NASA aren’t too happy to discover 10 cases where PCs were sold despite failing data removal procedures. Another four PCs which were about to be sold were found to contain data restricted under arms control rules. Not exactly news that makes you feel safe and confident is it? The computers were being sold off as NASA winds down its space shuttle operations and the last shuttle flight is scheduled for June 2011. In some cases, tests were not being run to confirm that the computers had been wiped and some PCs that had failed those verification tests were still being put up for sale. Dozens of PCs at the Kennedy Space Center equipment disposal facility were discovered with external markings listing network details too. NASA will now review and update its equipment disposal procedures and hopefully this time they’re followed.
