Peek might be best known for its compact email devices, but the company is now said to be looking to partner with manufacturers over in Asia to develop low-cost smartphones for emerging markets. The move is apparently aimed at turning the company into a profitable one in the long term. Peek has already sold a good 50,000 devices and is said to be close to turning a profit. The idea is to have its Peek software running on cheap smartphones that could be going for as low as $50. The software is designed to work on Qualcomm’s BREW platform and is compatible with low-cost chips from MediaTek. Let’s see what Peek will be able to come up with in the near future.
