Plastic bottles are the scourge of many developing countries, as the use of them are prevalent with no real and proper recycling system implemented. Well, the town of San Pablo, Philippines, certainly has a thought for the future of their children and killed two birds with a single proverbial stone, by using old plastic bottles to build a new school Recently, residents of the city gathered as many plastic 1.5 and 2 liter bottles as they could find, turning them into building material for a brand new school. These bottles areheld in place with adobe, a natural building material made from sand, clay, water, and other organic materials. Apart from being a whole lot cheaper, adobe is also found to be approximately three times stronger than concrete, making this “bottle school” one of the sturdier structures around. Hmmm, here’s an interesting thought – how about building homes and other buildings using a similar technique and material for earthquake-prone areas? Of course, high rise buildings are out of the question, but we’re talking more about homes and humble abodes.
