UK Legislatures Says Porn Should be an Opt In ProgramIn order to protect children, legislatures in the UK are urging UK Internet service providers (ISPs) to block pornographic content unless they opt into the service. The position would be a stark contrast to today’s Internet policy, which places the burden of protecting children from pornographic content on the shoulders of parents with add-on Internet monitoring services and parental control.

News of the UK policy comes just a day before the U.S. is looking to finalize its policy on net neutrality.

Ministers in the UK are urging ISPs to self-regulate and enforce the policy at the risk of a legislative intervention that would force a strict policy. Communications minister Ed Vaizey says, “I’m hoping they will get their acts together so that we don’t have to legislate, but we are keeping an eye on the situation and we will have a new communications bill in the next couple of years.”

However, ISPs argue that implementation may be costly and extremely difficult. Additionally, with the number of new Websites that go live everyday, it would be hard to manage and enforce a black list of sites.
