The University of Tokyo’s IRT (Information and Robot Technology) Research Initiative started off back in 2008 and now they have come up with another robot. The IRT Humanoid is a full-scale bipedal humanoid with 38 degrees of freedom and is equipped with a gyro sensor at its waist, 6-axis force sensors in its feet and two additional force sensors in each arm. The robot is controlled by a pair of computers on a network, each dedicated to the upper or lower half of the body. The robot is currently being taught to mimic human motions through motion-capture at Tokyo University’s Department of Mechano-Informatics. It doesn’t look like this robot will be replacing us at our jobs anytime soon, but we’re sure the robot researchers are busy working on that.
