When a company wants to take a short cut in acquiring new technology without having to go through the expensive R&D process, there is always the option of purchasing company that already has such expertise. We don’t suppose that this is the strategy which Samsung has adopted with the purchase of Liquavista, where the latter is a company that develops displays which use electrowetting to allow for full color visibility both indoors and out. This might just mean that Samsung’s future e-book readers and other devices such as smartphones, tablets and notebooks will come equipped with sunlight readable displays, although that might still be some way off as acquisitions tend to be messy and it will take time to have everything else settle down properly. Liquavista also do have transflective displays which can function as monochrome screens with the backlight turned off or full color displays with the backlight on – sounds familiar like what Pixel Qi offers? Only time will tell.
