Sony VAIO Y Series

[CES 2011] Sony is upgrading its VAIO Y Series notebook product line, offering more performance than the previous generation for $200 less. The VAIO Y will ship in two versions : one featuring the AMD Dual-Core E-350 processor, and the other one with the Intel Core i3-380UM (Intel Core previous generation). The new AMD E-350 combines the CPU and the GPU (Radeon HD 6310) in a single chip for a lower power consumption (18W) than the second generation Intel Core processors which integrates the CPU and the graphic processor on the same dye as well. The new AMD Fusion Family of APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) delivers good bang for the buck, allowing Sony to be more competitive on pricing for once, at the time of publishing, we only have the price for the AMD version. The Y models features a 11.6-inch  widescreen (1366×768) LED-backlit display, 6 hours of estimated battery life, 2GB DDR3 RAM (up to 4 GB) with 320GB  of HDD storage for the AMD version, and 4GB DDR2 RAM (up to 8GB) with 500GB of HDD storage for the Intel version. On the entertainment side, the device packs , a built-in Motion Eye webcam, stereo Bluetooth for streaming CD-quality music to compatible devices , HDMI output  (AMD version only) and Direct X 11 compatibility (AMD version only) for playing the latest 3D video games. Additionally, the AMD processor delivers smooth full HD movie playback, a feature that is not available in previous generation Intel Core processor.

The Sony VAIO Y will be available next month at www.sony.com/pr/yseries and at select retailers, the AMD version will cost  about $550. In Europe, both versions will start shipping at the end of January 2011.
