[CES 2011] Taser – the name itself often invokes a sense of pain, as most of us would know Taser from the device that law enforcement officers use to make sure even the toughest, meanest person won’t be able to stand up for long against its “wrath”. Well, for CES this year, Taser has a different device in mind – its Protector safe driver system that will help consumers stay safe by fighting the scourge of distracted driving. How so? Find out in the extended post.

The Protector safe driver system comprises of a hardware base unit, smart phone software
applications, and online data processing and management services. Installing the base unit into a vehicle is a snap thanks to the OBD II port, and whenever the vehicle is running, the base unit will get to work by emitting a Bluetooth signal. As for the distraction management software that is installed onto your smartphone (currently available for Android 2.2+ and BlackBerry 5.0+ phones – strange, how come there isn’t any for the iPhone?), it is capable of recognizing signals from the Protector base unit to lock down the handset so that only selected functions can be accessed. This prevents you from yakking all the way from the start of your journey to the end, making sure you concentrate more on the road as well.

The Protector safe driver system is available for $249.95, while a monthly service subscription will retail anywhere from $9.95 to $19.95 monthly. Hmmm, paying money to prevent your indisciplined self from talking on the road? Why not just turn off the phone every time?
