Ubiquisys did let the cat out of the bag today – by rolling out a special femtocell which will specifically target travelers and iPhone users, with the latter being the main market. Known as the attocell, this device will be connected to the Internet and broadcast a 3G connection which is suitable for phone calls and data without crossing the country’s local wireless limits. Depending on the country you’re living in, some of them allow power for a whole room, while the attocell is capable of broadcasting a signal 5mm out in tightly regulated areas, which should be more than enough to use a handset with a headset or speakerphone. The box itself will be shaped around the iPhone, where it is physically large enough to double up as a stand for said smartphone – albeit any handset which can support common HSPA and UMTS bands for 3G should also play pretty nice, with Android, BlackBerry and Symbian hardware already having undergone successful testing.
