Volkswagen certainly wowed the crowds at the Qatar Motor Show recently by showcasing their conceptual Formula XL1, a sporty looking vehicle that actually has a 1 liter engine underneath the hood. That’s certainly bonkers for conventional thinkers, since such an engine is clearly undeserving of a beauty like this. Well, it seems that Volkswagen will actually go ahead and have the XL1 enter production, albeit limited to just 100 units. We don’t have any idea on whether the production models will sport a similar two-cylinder TDI engine, electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, but if it did, most folks will certainly be pleased with its ability to sip a mere 0.9 liters of fuel for every 100 km traveled – that evens out to around 260 mpg, which is phenomenal where fuel consumption is concerned. Germany will of course get hold of the XL1 first, and if there are any units left over in the market, the US and China will be able to purchase this puppy. This is a head turner of a car if we ever saw one.
