When it comes to purchasing a new tablet device, the issue of what apps it supports always crops up and there was previously a rumor that RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet would be able to support Android apps. It was said to be done by using the open source Dalvik virtual machine. Now Bloomberg has confirmed the rumor and stated that RIM is indeed working on getting Android apps running on the PlayBook, which would make it a very attractive device, since there are already a large number of apps available for Android.

Despite earlier reports hinting the use of the Dalvik virtual machine, RIM apparently didn’t go down that path due to the ongoing patent dispute between Oracle and Google. Instead, RIM decided to develop it’s own in-house solution that will allow Android apps to run on the tablet, and it could be ready to launch in the second half of this year. There isn’t any official confirmation of this development from RIM just yet, but we’re hoping that it turns out to be true.
