MetroPCS has partnered with HTC to roll out their own VoLTE-capable handset – that’s Voice over LTE for you, with GSM Association’s technology director breaking the news. As for the carrier, they issued a pretty quick “no comment” reply. There are some pretty good reasons for MetroPCS to work quickly in order to deploy VoLTE as it currently relies on AWS bandwidth for its LTE services, which is similar bandwidth that it uses for CDMA. As for Verizon, their LTE is deployed in the relatively “unpopulated” 700MHz space, so that might point towards MetroPCS migrating away from CDMA voice soonest possible to open up 4G bandwidth. We do hope to see something more concrete come up in a short time.
