Social networking giant Facebook has plans to go greener, and they intend to do so by increasing the energy efficiency of its data centers worldwide thanks to the Open Compute Project. The Open Compute Project is actually an initiative that intends to share the technology it developed for its own data center in Oregon. According to Facebook, this technology has managed to result in a 38% increase in energy efficiency while helping companies lower its operating costs by up to 24%. Currently, load on data centers has spiked since Web companies tend to process a whole lot more data in real time, so it makes perfect sense to operate energy-efficient data centers. Could this development carve a smile on the faces over at Greenpeace, since they have long been on Facebook’s case where energy use is concerned? It remains to be seen whether other Silicon Valley companies and startups will follow Facebook’s steps in this matter.
