Normally, we’d say this is complete BS, but the fact that Blu-ray.com is throwing its two cents into the flames suggests there might be some merit. We’ve heard that Nintendo’s Wii 2/HD will be more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360. That’s within the realm of possibility, considering those consoles were built four to five years ago. A lot of advances have been made since. Historically, Nintendo’s always shied away from using standard discs to store its home console games. Their decision to use proprietary discs is often thought to be an attempt to keep piracy at bay. That was up until the GameCube era. The Wii used DVD discs (but the system didn’t officially support DVD videos) and now Blu-ray discs could be on the table. Sony’s Jack Tretton said before that the Xbox 360 is outdated because of its DVD storage. If Nintendo opts to use Blu-ray discs in its next console, it would be able to keep with the times, while keeping piracy at bay (BR discs have tougher piracy measures in place).
