If you love all things wine and yet failed to have an innate taste for it like the French, then you might need a new app to help you out. Less-savvy wine consumers are able to scan bottle bar codes so that they can receive instant tasting notes, scores and food pairings – helping you out greatly in a restaurant when you want to impress your date with your general knowledge. This app is free, and it has a rather unconventional name – Natalie MacLean Wine Picks & Pairings. All you need to do is snap a picture of any bottle label’s bar code in order to access a database of more than 150,000 wines at liquor stores located throughout North America.

Since the choice can prove to be overwhelming for beginners to the trade, this app will do you (and your brain) a huge favor, lessening the confusion and intimidation factor in the process. Being different from the rest of the apps, all it needs is to scan bar codes, while other apps require you to type different descriptors before a result can be gleaned.

Take Natalie’s digital word for it – she has the pedigree to back herself up, since she is a certified sommelier and author of “Red, White and Drunk All Over,” while owning  one of the largest wine sites in the world: nataliemaclean.com. Available on iPhones only that the moment, Natalie hopes that the new version for BlackBerry users will be out before the month is over.
